Student: Master, is it true that the fundemental pursuit of human existence is the pursuit of happiness? Master: Indeed. Student: And yet humans are, in essence, fundementally corporeal beings, are we not? Master: We are. Student: Is it then fair to say that the pursuit of happiness is merely a local phenomemon, endemic only to humans and other sentient beings? Or is it more appropriate to think that the pursuit of hapiness is in fact universal, and that therefore, the conscious pursuit of harmony should be considered a goal worthy of universal pursuit? Master: Indeed, the pursuit of hapiness, and therefore harmony, may be said to be universal. For it is the nature of all things, and not merely sentient beings to yearn for satisfaction, by all means. If it were not, then humans (and other sentient beings) would have to be inherently different (by birth, by training, or by supernatural means) than so-called 'dead matter. Student: Shall we look closer at these three alternatives? For it is said that only by exhausting all alternatives can we reach wisdom. Master: Yes. Let us begin. (1) It may be the case that we are endowed by supernatural means, but that those means discriminate in our favor (and in the favor of other sentient beings), and that this gift (or is it a curse?) is not applicable to the nature of so called 'dead' matter.
