Gah your mixing is gorgeous. Not really sonically filled, but I like that. I really appreciate a minimalist aesthetic at times, less is more if you do it right. Not too much variation (could use a little bit more) but it's a house tune, so that amazing beat is the focus here. Another great piece from you!

Rex Yehudi (shoham) gave feedback to Lorenzo Pagano for “Funk Thing”:
Apt title. Very funky guitar tone. Reminds me of something from Curtis Mayfield, or Issac Hayes. The only thing is it could be significantly longer, I think. I'm buying it anyway, so let me know if and when you get paid.

Very cool track. Did you build it from scratch, or are you using samples? Either way what DAW are you using to put this together?

Sounds really good, found myself nodding my head unconsciously throughout (was listening while doing something else).

The only samples used in this are the one shots for the drums, wwhich are programed. Everything else was built from scratch. I primarily use ableton live,. On occasion I use reason as a plugin to make instruments.

Cool. I have been looking into getting a DAW for making beats. I know that Reason is a few hundred dollars. What's the advantage over a free DAW for a beginner like me, if any? Thanks.

Sorry for taking so long to respond! The advantage of a true DAW over a free one is simple- features. Free programs are extremely limiting, and you'll simply find yourself frustrated by the lack of flexibility. Go with Ableton or Reason, because they're easy to learn and extremely feature rich.

I love funk grooves, and you've captured it quite well here. I'd watch your levels while recording and keep them from peaking. You can always punch them up when mixing and mastering. Great idea track though.

WalaWalaWala gave feedback to Lewis for “Upbright”:
Cool beat. I like this kind of mellow Jazz. Are these instruments live or all or some computer generated, or some combination of the two? Piano solos sound very good, and the drums are nice, especially if they are computer, as it's not that easy to get a nice variety and tone-- I don't think from electronic drums, from what I understand, though I've never programmed them.

Cool changes in key as well, though it could have been twice as long at least. My niece and nephew were just getting down :D

That funky bass synth grabbed me as soon as the track started. Love the kick and clap beat - standard, but it carries the song well. I'm listening on neutral studio headphones, but I can tell the bass drum and underlying bass line are absolutely huge. I think the one thing I'd like to hear is something in the mid-range. You've got a strong low end and top end, but the mids feel empty. Keep it up, man!

Thanks alot! This track will be on my upcoming EP, which will come out December 1st. Stay posted!

Also, you should try it on something with a sub :)

Cool production value. What do you have the guitar tuned to here? It reminds me of some of John Lennon's albums with Yoko :D Is that a Tabla drum?

 Oct 06, 2011, 11:45 EDT
Haha thanks man! and ya it's a drum you play with your hands, I'm not really sure what its called. The bass and guitar are tuned down a whole step.
